On the 86-89 center console you have the 'rubics cube' assemblies; 3 trays that slide together. To R&R the thermostat you need to remove the back cover of the console, 4 screws, a few screws on the inside of the sides of the console, carefully remove the plugs for the mirror heater and hazard switch (their tabs break often), the 3 pc rubic's cube needs to be pulled toward you however the wire harness in the console and the aluminum thermostatic tube tend to hold things back, you can provide some relief on this tension by given them all some slack by unclipping where the wire harness cables are held down in the forward section floor on the RH side, in a worse case scenario you might need to remove the screws that hold down the center console so you can tip of up a bit, once you get the enough slack you carefully move the rubic toward the shifter, there will either bbe a plastic rivet or a screw hold the top tray to the middle tray located toward the back of it, this needs to be removed to separate the rubic.......... an so forth.

Griffiths Kuehl replacement thermostat as detailed instructions that can assist you.
