The volume nob on my 97 m3 is no longer working correctly. I want to replace with a used stock unit that is plug and play. When I placed a WTB add I recieved several responses but I am not sure if the units can simply be swapped out?

How can I tell?

Thanks

I'm surprised there are any stock units still functioning. On most the display fails after 7 years.

I would think the 97+M3 HU's are interchangeable but I cant tell you how to be sure.

Any aftermarket should be an easy drop in. Crutchfield is a another good place to shop.

Not exactly a HU question, but related enough I hope. The reception on the stock unit on my '96 328ic was terrible - AM but particularly FM. I replaced it with a unit from Crutchfield and it's marginally better, but still terrible. I have other vehicles I drive in the same area and they pick up stations the bimmer doesn't even know exists. Anyone have help for this?

I want to replace the head unit in my 97 E36... after removing the factory head unit, I can see a plastic tab thing (which acts like stabilizer for the factory stereo) sticking up from the back area (where the stereo used to be).

Won't this get in the way of the new stereo?

Not sure which piece you are talking about.

IIRC, there is a finger shaped piece that screws off of the back of old radio and onto the new and it slides into a hold behind the radio to stabilize it.

Yeah, it's related to the rod that sticks out of the BMW stereo...

the piece that i'm referring to is the plastic part (the hold) that sticks up (and has a hole in it).

Will new stereos fit with this "stopper" there? I would think that the wires/cables/etc needed to hook up a new 3rd party stereo would prevent the stereo from fitting.

Do people remove (cut or break off) this part to get more room?

I thought maybe that was what you were asking. My JVC Aresnal KD-AHD59 fit fine.

Its a little tight back there. The factory connector is big and has to be pushed off to the side.
