e 30 idle easy fix
Restrict the ICV with a penny stuck in the hose. Then open the throttle a little.

My '87 325is , aka "pop start/no brakes", had been running fine when suddenly without warning the idle went nuts. Up and down /undriveable.

This works fine while I troubleshoot the real problem .

Interesting Tom.. The ICV allows air to bypass the throttle butterfly - so if its plugged with a penny - you then have to open the throttle to keep it running right?

So maybe the throttle switch isnt working?? When the throttle is fully closed, the throttle switch sends a voltage to the idle control valve to allow a certain amount of air to pass and idle properly.

I think you can test for resistance on the throttle switch - I have a Bentley I can look it up for you if needed..

throttle switch
I did check the switch for continuity - closed and open- and got good signals - that was my first thought also. Checked all the hoses & electric , even tried another ICV.

Either it is something very esoteric - or - I missed something -

The car runs great , zips right up to the redline, cold idle is rough

I had the Potentiometer go out in the Bosch AFM last year - that gave me some issues during idle. It would barely idle.. It would actually run better if I disconnected the AFM and restart. Other than that - the standard vacuum leak can cause idle fluctuations..
