Wayne....

Ok...heres the scenario.

Ya gotta start off with a well prepped surface..(of course).

My 914 started out with having the "wide body" rear flares and some Rube Godberg nonsense done to the fronts via a hammer....so I purchased some 914 GT style front fiberglass units & riveted them on and faired all 4 flares into the body.

The rear spoiler was an "adapt" from a 80's IROC Camaro and it was also faired into the trunk lid.

Ahhh..time for paint!

Ive painted cars in the past with real laquer with a gun but those days are gone thanks to the EPA requirements for low VOC emissions.,so, I looked high & low & found Rust-O-Leums "laquer" in a can on the shelf at Home Depot at $3.79 a can.

I purschased one can & thought Id just test it on one fender...and the results were Astonishing!!...heres the procedure:

1. Apply approximately 4 coats with each other coat sprayed at opposite or criss cross styly applications.

2. Color sand lightly with 800 wet o dry paper just to dull up the surface.

3. Apply 3 - 4 more coats in same fashion, emphasizing a litle more paint on the raduis corners or edges of vehicle.

Note:....theres no secret here to spraying technique, & after the first can & a few small runs, youll develop your own technique for a good surface application.

4. Let the car dry for approx. 4 days

5. Colr sand all surfaces again with 800 grit wet o dry in a wet environment.

6. Using a orbital polisher / sander and a terrycloth pad, cut all surfaces with a good cutting compound....youll have to experiment a bit but your trying to get a "dull mirrored" finish...be carefull of the polisher on corners as not to burn them.

7. Finally, and again with polisher, wax all surfaces and use a nice soft buffing pad.......you wont believe what a differnce will take place from that dull mirrored surface to the final product.

,..............Unfortunatley, Rustoleum only makes 3 colors in laquer..white, black and a forest green......but!...Pep Boys carrrys a line of laquer that offers 3 more colors i.e. silver, etc.....Ive tested both & theyre both good.

Hope this answers any questions..... its not rocket science, just a lot of work.

Dave.

hey wayne:

what are you going to do with a 908 engine?
I may know someone in the bay area that can
help you. He does a lot of Porsche race car
restorations.
