stereo issue

I installed an aftermarket unit (kenwood excelon 869) in my 92 325i. Most of the time it works fine but every so often the music cuts out... the spectrum analyzer still registers that music is playing but no sound... if i turn it off for a while then it starts working again for a while.... anyone ever have an issue like this? it also seems like it starts happening after i finish messing with changing bulbs eg. brake light or tail light......

Do you have an external amp? If so, I'd bet the problem is in the amp or in the wiring to the amp. It might even be overheating and shutting off...

The "spectrum analyzer" just means that the head-unit thinks it's still making noise. The problem could be in the output section of the head unit, or anything "downstream" of that.

The amps have not been installed yet.... Could there be any grounding issues which would contribute?

Also the amount of time the system is on at any given time is like 30 mins... I should hope its not overheating...

I had a similar problem on my 325is. I routed the aftermarlket stereo through the stock amp and had a problem where the stereo would just quit out. As soon as i removed the stock amp, (which isnt really all theat great in my opinion) the cutting out stopped. I dont know if this is the same problem that is in your car but maybe it will help you out in determining what is going on.

How did you wire the speakers coming out of the amp? did you simply tap into the factory wiring, or re-do the whole thing? On mine, I ended up having to re-do the whole wiring from the head unit back. I also deleted the factory fader switch.

I dont care for BMW sound systems they seem to add it as sort of an afterthought. Small speakers, underpowered, etc.. I ended up putting in a brand new Blaupunkt CD player running into a 1000 watt amplifier, then out to two JL Audio 6x9's in custom enclosures on the rear deck, two MB Quart 6 1/2's in the doors. ( had to cut the door panels, they wouldnt fit in the stock locations) then a JBL 18 inch subwoofer in the trunk. Maybe it's overkill, but hey, why not? besides, there's nothing quite like playing Pink Floyd at eardrum piercing levels.

If you would liek a wiring schematic, feel free to email me.
