convert top only goes up halfway

99 m3 convert, wife took it out today, now the top goes up, cover goes down, but the top won't go the rest of the way closed....

stupid thing just sits there. goes back down fine, everything else seems normal..

anyone ever have similar experience?

got it.

had time to think about it, and figured it had to have something to do with the fact that the emergency cord was pulled last week.

so, pulled it again, and operated the motor to the full down position, then popped BOTH motors back (didn't see the cover motor before, and it had been working fine), then followed the directions about synching the top.

hold top down button with key off, turn on key and hold it down for at least 12 seconds, top gets sucked down and is re-synched.

...guess the bmw dealership will have to wait for my first visit ;-)

Perhaps you can help.........my son and I have done the resynch procedure and it is almost successful.....the protective cover misses clearing the top below the rear window by about 1/2 inch.....we straightened out one of the gas pistons that help push the cover up....have a few more things to check ...but any ideas would be helpful...........other than the 1/2 inch clearance problem the top operates as would be expected..........next step might be cleaning the motor and assembly that lifts this cover........it is motor in fender well area.......Thanks in advance......walt (dr_berkman@hotmail.com)

I dunno, I didn't have to bend anything. basically, I just put back to stock by pressing the 'down top' button until both motors shut off, at that point both the motor shafts lined up with the input collars, and they were pushed back into position easily (which I didn't do the first time). I don't think the the resynch probably mattered in my case, it was more to get the motors engaged at the appropriate spot in the top movement arc.

the motor for the cover did seem to slip a bit as I missed it the first time, and it didn't put it up all the way and it actually hit the cover. you could easily make sure both motors are in their correct position. find them first (mine is a 99 m3, the top motor is plainly visible once the left rear interanal carpet is removed, the cover motor is behind a bace, not easily seen), make sure they are fully engaged (if not, that might be your problem), you CAN pull the emergency release under the seat, just remember once done you will need to push the top down all the way to open the trunk, and make sure it's completely down when you push both motors back into position.

good luck...after that it sounds like a trip to a shop ;-(
