I have a 1997 328ic with a broken top. To date, I have tried, as suggested on this site, to "re-engage" the motors - didn't work. I tried replacing the toggle switch that controls the top - didn't work. I then took it to an independent shop which was recommended to me to check the electronics system for default codes and/or bad sensors. He cleared out all the default codes, but it still didn't work and was out of his area of expertise. So, I took it to Just BMW who is an independent shop which, as the name implies, works on just BMWs - thinking this would be a relatively easy fix for them. That was a month ago and I still do not have my car. They started by checking all the sensors, fuses, connections, etc., and then came to the conclusion that the "front", top motor needed to be replaced along with the control unit that relays the signal. So, with $1,400 spent on parts and labor, my top was fixed - until I got it home. Before I left their shop, I opened and closed the top twice before driving off. It worked great. So, I put the top down and went home. When I tried putting the top up when I got home, nothing! I could hear the motor trying to work and the dash lights pulsed, but the top didn't move.... (Continued in next post)
