E-36 Convertible Top

I have a 96 328 convertible that I’ve been trying to get the top working I got the top down using the lever to start the reset process and everything went smoothly I had to use pliers to adjust the splines on the soft top motor , when I re engaged the motors and started the reset the tonneau goes all the way up but the soft top motor doesn’t make any sounds or anything like that and the soft top stays seated in the storage area
And the tonneau stays up wondering if this is a sign my motors bad or anything I can do to solve this issues?
