Sensor

I've seen a number of intake systems offered with & w/o a 'sensor'. What exactly is this, what is it's function, & how do I know if I need it or not on a '97 328is?

There is some sensor little cord. I don't have it on this computer, but I have a picture of it on my other computer. Anyways, it connects to the back of the stock airbox. You do NOT need it, it is found only on OBDI cars. Yours is an OBDII, and thus yours does not have it. For OBDI cars, intake designers must take this sensor into account and have an extra hole that it can plug into, along with an extra hole in the heatshield. You don't need to worry about that.

That’s why you 'rock' Stup, .............clear understandable answers, fast.

Now does that sensor thing have anything to do with the smaller 't' pipe that extends out on a 45 degree angle from the main intake pipe (see pic)? If not, what is that for? I'm gettin a heat shield from that guy you turned me onto the other day, & I'm in search of an affordable short arm intake on EBay. I'm guessin that if it's an OBDII applicable intake, it will not have that smaller pipe extending out. Is this online, or is that for something else?

Thanks dude.

Yes, that is where the sensor would have normally gone in the intake if you had that sensor. Most intakes usually do not accomodate this little sensor thing, I've been advised to actually just zip tie it down and out of the way. I believe it is actually a temperature sensor, and antifreeze can run through the hose to prevent it from freezing during the cold winters. Since I'm in SoCal, that wouldnt apply.

But back to your situation. Here's a very helpful website if you intend to piece together your intake kit yourself. The guy also owns a 328 OBDII, so you should be set. I personally think his setup looks very comparable to the name brands, if not even better.

Enjoy your summer project.

Yah Stup, you linked that page to me way back yander when we originally started talkin about intakes. I e-mailed that guy, askin him if he had developed the template for the heat shield, & all he said was "get a big hammer or something heavy to drop on the sheet metal". The intake itself didn't look too bad to construct, but the shield looked like a pain. I ordered a very nice chrome short arm intake from a company called Autobacs1, out by you in So El Monte, Ca. and the heat shield from that Eric Lukas guy. They should get to me by next Thursday (coincidentally the day I start vacation), and I can't wait to get them in. Both products delivered cost me $110, obviously the cheapest option I had come across so far. The only other product close, was the Par intake at $183 delivered. I finally came to the conclusion that I didn't want the cold air (pipe to the bumper) intake. The short arm just had too many other advantages for me.
1. It looks much cooler under there
2. I wouldn't have to worry about hydrolock
3. The install is much easier
4. I wouldn't have to reroute anything under the hood (horns, ect)
5. If I want to put the stock air box back on over the winter (Chicago winters kinda tend to be un-kind), its easier & faster.

Talk to ya partner.
