Check engine light

The check engine light comes on on my 92 318I at an idle or when I am off the throttle going down a long hill. It takes about 10 to 15 seconds to come on and just a tap on the throttle will make it go out. The car runs fine except when I first start it after setting all night. It then idles about 1000 rpm's and drops to 400 rpm's and back up. It does this untill it warms up. Any ideas? Thanks, Vernon

hmm... have you tried reading the codes from the engine?

It also sounds like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Thanks for the idea on vacuum leak. I'll check it out tomorrow. As for as checking the codes I will wait to do that as a last resort as I would have to take it to the dealer and the closest one is about 85 miles from me. Vernon
