A/C fan will only run on high setting.
The A/C fan will only run on the high setting (4). Nothing happens when at 1, 2, or 3. Any suggestions? Everthing appears okay. Thanks.

Sounds like either the rheostat has gone bad or the resistors that control the fan.

Doesn't seem, to me, like the rheostat as temp will vary, as will recirc/fresh. Just won't run except on high. Where are the resistors located? I looked behind the panel. What a pain.
Thanks. |
I heard it's very common issue on E36 ACs. Well I had same issue and had to replace blower resistor (green one. Pelican parts carries one too?). Blower resistor dies due to age, and blower setting 1-2-3, which needs resistor to control blower speed (setting 4 bypasses resistor) doesn't work anymore.
It took me ~20 mins to replace it, and most of time was spent on taking off cover below the steering wheel. Once the cover is off, it's just matter of locating resistor pack, pull it out, and plug in the new one in. Get a blower resistor, and just replace it by yourself. Good luck. |
Forgot to mention where it is.
in my 93, it was directly above the gas pedal, slightly towards the center consol. You can see black plug connected to 4 wires, and at the end of the plus is the resistor. Hope it helps. |
