Question on Old Article: Lifting E36's

Hi, Wayne.

OK so I'm slow, or actually just discovering your previous Tech Articles. Keep 'em coming!

I have a question prompted by your article in 2002 (the *year*!) about jacking and supporting E36's. I have jacked the front of these cars many times by putting my floor jack under the middle of the cross-member, lifting the front evenly. I then jack stand the car of course.

Any reason to *not* use the crossmember? You have to "miss" the power steering cooling loops, but other than that? I did have to get a very low profile jack to get under the front of my '95 M3 air dam, but other than that, it seems fine.

What are your thoughts?

Hmm, I am guilty of using the crossbeam as well. Probably okay, but definitely not the strongest point of the car. It's out in the middle of the car, unsupported by anything. It's hollow, and welded, and is pretty strong, but in general, probably not the best place to jack up from...

Jared, like the article regarding the E36 control arm replacement. I need to do this one mine, because the alignment shop says its too worn to get it done.

One suggestion, how about a parts list on the article.. So we know what we should be buying. I hate getting the main parts then figuring out I need other stuff and having to wait for it to be shipped, or goto the local stealer.

We'll be adding parts lists to the articles after I knock out the book...
