Question Piston Ring Job on 1989 325i

Hey, anyone ever change piston rings on an M20 engine? (2.5L L6, 87-89) I've been shown that mine are worn pretty bad. I've been told that it's possible to change them with the engine in the car. Has anyone ever tried that before, or know someone who has?

If the rings are worn

the cylinders will be elongated and needing a bore also.

That requires the engine be in a bore grinding machine, and pistons be oversized.

I have seen piston rings changed in the car but only when there was no wear.
