Any ideas (cheap) for improving the steering rack ratio?

I have been driving my newly modified E30 and enjoying it quite a bit, but I have to admit that the steering ratio seems very slow and doesn't provide much feedback.

I was wondering if anyone else has tried to swap in a different steering rack to improve the steering and feel? I had found some information that the manual rack from a european model 323i will fit and has a faster ratio. If this would be a bolt-on swap I might consider it. The car is sufficiently light that I really don't think power steering is necessary. It would also allow elimination of the power steering pump and such which would be nice.

Also, the power steering on my 2001 Z3 2.5 has a much faster ratio and much better feel. Is this system able to be swapped onto the E30 cars? This might be a junkyard alternative.

Just thinking about projects for the winter.

Rich
