Cool bad vibrations

Over the last fews days I've noticed some additional vibration coming through the shifter that didn't feel normal. While picking my son up school yesterday I noticed the following....

> ebrake on, engine in running a normal idle
> shifter in neutral
> does not matter if the clutch is engaged or not

Revving the engine from idle to about 1500 rpm, gave some strong vibrations that could be felt through the car and the driver seat. It's very pronounced at 1000rpm. Any thoughts on what this might be? Broken engine mount, transmission mount or something more drastic?

The engine sounds fine, no coughing or rough running. No engine light. Runs fine at higher rpm, but I think thats just from running faster cancels out the harmonics it's creating.

Any perals of wisdom are appreciated.

That really sounds like an engine mount. Although I have not seen the BMW engine mount, most are two metal plates separated and interlocked by a rubber insulator. With the insulator cracked or gone, the plates rest against each other. I had a solid engine mount on my Chevelle (back in the day), just on the torque load side, and it was a hugely noticeable difference in the amount of vibration.

If it is not a broken mount, and you truly have something generating more vibration, then an old trick for finding vibration is to stick a dowel rod of wood down, end first, on different locations. Then, rest your hand/finger on the opposing end. You can start to source the vibration.
