Radio Antenna Amplifier - Reset?
In my '93 325, the radio antenna is built into the rear window. In order to improve reception an amp is installed behind the left hand rear pillar trim panel to boost the signal.
Recently, I did some work to my DME and disconnected the battery. Subsequently, when I reconnected the battery and entered the correct code to make my radio functional again, I noticed a drastic reduction in radio signal strength. Do I need to somehow reset the radio antenna amplifier - or install a new one - to achieve the same level of recepion I did prior to perfoming the electircal work? (Not that it matters, but I have a BMW CD changer in the trunk wired to my head unit.) |

I've got something real simialr; however it only effects AM reception. FM is clear as a bell, but for what ever reason, AM is very staticy. What's more, when I go over a bump, the reception gets clear, only to go back to fuzzy a little while latter. I can also clear up the reception for a short time by slamming my driver side door shut. I've been tryin to figure this out for a while, so let us know what ya find out.

Hmm, good info Ad Hoc. Sounds like the lead may be loose in the antenna box. Now to access it.
Pelican dudes: What about getting to the antenna box? This article said to remove the seats, how is this done? It also said the antenna box is in the 'C Pillar', couldn't this be accessed through the trunk? Any tech articles on gettin the seats out, or accessing the antenna box? Thanks all.

Alright Ad Hoc, I see where the box is attached (from your file), but how do you go about getting the c-pillar cover off? You don't really have to take out the whole frickin' back seat, do you?

I hope not. This is where hopefully the Pelican crew can help. The photo is from a manual and I personally haven't yet tried to access the amp. Unfortunately, the file I sent you came with nothing other that the brief set of instructions and the photo.

No, if your trying to get to the amp, that's accessed from the trunk. Once open, you remove the drivers side trunk panel & presto. However, that antenna box is on the driver side rear roof post, which coinsidentally has a cover that extends below the rear seat. How would ya get that motherf****r off without at very least tilting the back seat forward?

Pelican guys, any word on accessing the antenna box in the C pillar? Does the rear seat really have to come out, & if so, how much of a pain is that gonna be?

The rear seat comes out easy. Give the rear a tug upward and rearward. The seatbacks are a little harder. You have to fold the almost flat and tug on it while rocking them back and forth. The Bentley manual has pictures of this.

I don't think the Bentley manual is available online (they'd lose money). You can pick up an E36 Bentley for around $35 - they also have the manual on CD at a higher price. I've owned BMWs since the mid 80s and have always had Bentley manuals for them - IMHO, it's the bible for BMW owners.
