clutch replacement?

i have a question. i just bought a clutch. but i dont know which way it needs to face towards the engine. in the center, the nub (where the shaft goes thru) part that sticks out, one side is short and one side is longer. which side is suppose to be going into the engine?

because i think i put it in the wrong way. because when i tried putting back on the transmission, there is about _________ that much space between the tranny and engine and it wont budge in.

I think the longer side goes out>>towards trans>>if you didnt line uP the clutch (clutch align tool) then it wont go in
