e36 performance

How dramatic is the difference between a 325 and a 318 (both e36 cars)...I have been looking for a 325 convertible with 5 speed manual, but it seems 318’s are far more prevalent with manual....to possibly help with the advice - I am consolidating two cars into one - and I know all such consolidations are compromises...I am selling the Miata (MX5) and a 944 N/A (both with manual transmissions) and am hoping that an e36 convertible will be a reasonable compromise for a topless daily driver - I don't mind high revvers (love the Miata) but I do want some torque and speed a la the 944....how does the 318 manual compare with the performance of a 325 auto

In my experience the 325 auto does not fair signifiacantly better than the 318 standard. The performance of both these vehicles could be considered leisurely at best. Yes, the 325 does have a advantage in torque which is noticeable, especially when passing on the highway, but does not justify buying one. I say go with the 325 manual, it will not disappoint. The standard will allow you to really wring the M50 for what it is worth. Besides, who really wants a slush box in a sports car?
