Unhappy noisy engine 87 325i

I have a 87 325i convertible. When the engine revs, even a little, there is a rough noise that suddenly appears and stops when the revs drop. It sounds like a bearing of some sort that works intermittantly, rpm dependent. I have had 2 experienced mechanics look at it briefly, one said it was the fan clutch.. I doubted this as it was replaced about 6k miles ago. The other said it was the housing around the distributor..I don't think so. It is getting worse, and I can't localize it. It is perhaps worse on the left side of the engine. Any ideas?? Thanks.

No, but I think the timing belt is due. It's been about 50,000 mi but also about 6 years. No water pump work done ,at least in last 2 years that I have owned it. Thanks

Very common in the above repairs to get the plates back on correctly->>if they are wrong they will make noise->>but if no repairs have been done then I would look elsewhere
