Angry Air Flow Meter

My 1986 318i is guzzling alot of fuel(3lts for 20km,Before it was 3lts for 40km)my mechanic says my Air Flow Meter my be faulty because he has checked all other areas.How can the flow meter affect these and what adjustment can I make these flow meter?

If your AFM is faulty, your engine should idle wildly. If not, you probably just need a tune up.

IIRC, the only adjustment on an AFM is to vary the amount of air that gets past that is not measured (there is a bypass adjustment screw). This was set at the factory and rarely needs to be changed. If the AFM itself is faulty and needs to be replaced, the idle should be off, like ProjectE30 said.
