Hi all,
I have a '97 328i 5-speed that has lost nearly all power steering assist. There is some assist when turning the wheel a number of rotations in a parking maneuver, but on normal turns and curves there is no initial assist. Just a very stiff wheel. According to the Haynes manual, air can be bled from the system by rotating the wheel slowly from lock-to-lock twice. I've done that and had no change in performance. My fluid reservoir is full, and the car has never leaked a drop. The condition of the fluid though, isn't so great. I'm sure it used to be ATF, but it looks mostly dark gray now. The car has 160,000 miles, and I suspect the pump needs to be rebuilt. Maybe just the gray parts... Anyway, I see that Pelican offers a rebuilt pump for ~$270, and wondered if anyone had experience with rebuilt parts, or had any other suggestions to try. Many thanks in advance, Rich |

You can get a used one on ebay for like $50. I saw one on there recently. You can also try car-part.com. They usually offer a warranty.
