knocking noise

my E36 318i saloon 1992 makes a knocking noise that starts up when i am doing around 35mph and the knocking gets faster when i increase speed. it also knocks when i go over bumps and pot holes. it is coming from the rear passenger side.
any information would be grately appreciated
