M42 Flywheel

Any cons to running a single-mass flywheel on an M42?

engine vibration?

More importantly, why do you want to do this?

Dual-mass flywheel weighs about 28lbs. and the single-mass weighs about half that. Better 1st and 2nd gear acceleration?

I personally would go with a custom built lightweight unit if you wanted to do this. I've driven a couple of cars with lightweight flywheels on the street and found that you really have to re-learn how to drive the car all over again. Traffic will certianly not be all that fun to drive in as well.

You could try it, however if it was not to your liking, you'd have to pull the tranny out all over again...

Um, I hate to nitpick, but this article mentions something that isnt exactly correct. A single mass flywheel is not going to improve the car's overall acceleration. It just doesnt work that way. All it will do is allow the motor to rev up a bit faster. I read through the list of parts required to do this, and I'll tell you that it simply isnt worth doing cost wise for the eventual result. Also, the car will have more engine vibration and will throw off the balance of the crankshaft. If you wanted to do it correctly, you would want to have the engine balanced to the flywheel, but that involves a full rebuild.

This is a common myth about flywheels. Lightened flywheels are not good for the street. On the race track, the advantage of a lightened flywheel is evident. How often does a race car sit in traffic?

Just a reference to the instructions, not an endorsement
