fast idle and rough running 320i

Okay...my 1982 BMW 320i is now possessed! It has a hard start, then immediately races to 3500 RPM, and refuses to kick down. Before it started doing that (just did this starting this weekend), it would run great for the first 15 minutes, then start to sputter and bog down at any speed and under acceleration. I can let it sit for short time, then it runs wonderfully again...for 15 minutes! HELP!!! WTF...

Sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere. Most likely the air boot from the sensor plate to the throttle body. The boot may be old and cracked.

Hey Jared,

My 1980 just started doing the same thing. I thought it might be the cold start valve, heat time switch, or the warm up regulator. Could any of these be the problem?

I'd check that the aux. air regulator is closing completely..

Also check the timing and the mixture.

This could also be the warm-up regulator, but i dont think it would cause the engine to surge up to 3500... Check for vacuum leaks first.... Whenever the idle is high, thats the first thing to check....
