Waterpump failure

Well, my wife's '96 328i suffered the dreaded waterpump impeller failure last week at 145000 km (about 90k miles). No prior warning occured, just sudden temp increase and water loss from the radiator. I had it fixed at an independent shop specialising in BMW's, who replaced the water pump & thermostat and had the radiator fixed. Pressure testing showed no further pressure loss, so I'm holding thumbs that the head gasket and head itself are unaffected. It's been a few days after the repair and no further coolant loss has shown up. I guess we were lucky...

Moral of the story, if your car still has the plastic water pump impeller and you're approaching 60-80k miles, get it replaced pro-actively with the new metal impeller type!
