code #1215 MAF sensor

my car wouldn't start last night and this is the code i got when doing the code check on my 89 325i. lately its been having running issues where it would get a weird idle surge when i come to a stop, and buck sometimes when iwould pull out agressively. i thought it was my o2 sensor but the code tells me otherwise.

now if this code is thrown, is it pretty much a given that i need a new sensor or is itpossible, the AFM is clogged or blocked? the car won't start at all, just cranks and cranks. when i was able to start it once after letting it sit, it had no idle, all rough and wanted to backfire and stall.

any ideas?

First let me say I'm by no means a BMW expert. But I'll see if I can help.

First when was your last tune up? Plugs, cap, rotor, valve adjustment, fuel filter, air filter, etc.

Second if you believe the air flow meter is plugged or dirty, it's really not hard to pull off and inspect it. You just un do the two 10 mm hold down nuts on the air box, remove the wire connector on the air flow meter by pressing in, and pulling off. Then loosen the large screw clamp ( hose clamp ).

When i was doing my Post Purchase inspection, I pulled mine off and cleaned it. It was somewhat gummed up and gooy inside.

Good luck.

yeah i've already pulled the airbox apart and checked the plate freeplay. its good and nothing is blocking it. so i have a new sensor on order.
