Angel Eyes
I've seen a lot of different brands of angel eyes that have come out for e36's, though some seem to be of less quality. What would be the best set of angel eyes to get for an e36. Something thats not too expensive, any ideas?

Do you already have euro ellipsoids, or are you upgrading completely from stock US units? If you've got the stock US stuff, then there is no way around being "not too expensive". I've seen kits anywhere from $300 to $600, which in my opinion, if your looking at the proposal from a 'Curve Of Diminishing Returns' standpoint, I find it hard to justify.

For 300-400 you might be able to get a set of Depo Ellipsoids with DDE Lightning. I find this the best looking type of angel eyes. You can also go with Inpro headlights with built in Angel eyes but I find them not as bright.

IF I was gonna do it, I'd probably go with somethin' like this........
One stop shop option. You get the euro ellipsoid glass cover, angel eyes, plug & play wiring harness, & a frickin' warranty for $250. Now of course, these aint OEM, but what do ya want for that price. Now, if I already had euro ellipsoids, & wanted to upgrade them to include angel eyes, then I'd go with something like this. Seeing as how I'm still running the stock US stuff, I don't have a first hand point of reference, this is just the route I'd go if I was gonna do it.

I was thinking about getting some red demon eyes for my red '94 325is. I don't have euro ellipsoids, so the lights will cost about $400 off eBay (though I don't see any being sold currently that aren't the ugly chrome Hella kind). Do you know if these lights are bright enough to see during the day? I am also wondering whether they are legal. I read through the Massachusetts law code and didn't see anything suggesting otherwise, but red lights on the front of a vehicle... Of course I'm a libertarian, so laws, well...

From the friendly officers who have 'talked' with me over the years, you can have different colored lights on your car, as they are not flashing. Any kind of a flashing red light, no matter how small, indicates you are an emergency vehicle. Flashing yellow indicates a utility/city work vehicle.
From what I understand, the lights are not bright enough to be seen during the day, especially red lights. You can enhance them by backing the rings up with reflective tape, but still... you aren't going to see them very well. |

Yah, that's my biggest problem with the angel eye senerio. As cool as it looks up close, unless it's the newer factory stuff, you can barely tell that you popped the cash for them. I really like the euro ellipsoid route, but I've yet to see aftermarket angel eyes that turn my head.

I agree, which has been the biggest stopping point as far as looking into DDE's. Why bother if they are just dull glowing rings that you can barely see. I've come across a couple BMWs running their parking lights at early dusk and you can barely see the rings. Although, I saw one sitting in a parking lot at night with just the running lights on, and it looked pretty wicked.
One thing to look for regarding aftermarket rings is whether the light is generated via an LED or through a bulb system, like the factory system. Usually the colored rings are LED driven, which can tend to not be as bright. |

Yeah, I've heard the dullness issue is a problem. Good to hear red is probably legal though. You sound like you speak from experience, Blkongry

Cheap angel Eyes?!?
I have a set but if I could find a E-bay retailer that can get you a set under $200 since the SECOND 3 series since our beloved e36 is coming soon so pray that the parts start to drop in price.

DDE's
You don't want to buy a set off ebay for many reasons.
If you still want info on this send me an email to quest@pacifier.com as I've written a 2 page FAQ on upgrading E36 headlights that would be VERY helpful to many of you. ty

I bought a set off Ebay for $200 and am very happy with them. Nothing wrong with buying from Ebay... you just have to be careful with who the seller is. Ebay is just the forum, you are buying from the seller, and each one is different. Here's who I got mine through... great units (even with glass covers), awesome seller, incredibly fast delivery, and easy-as-pie install. Just FYI for all...
