E36 Manual Starter Removal

I am in the middle of a clutch replacement and the Bentley manual says the starter is removed from below on a manual and from above after removing the intake manifold (Pelican ). I can't see any way to get the starter out from below and don't relish removing the intake all to remove the nut on the back of the upper starter bolt. Any comments or suggestions. Is there any way to get the bolt out without removing the intake maifold.

Which model/year car you got?
When I did the clutch on my 97 328is I did not have to remove the intake.. The starter hole is threaded, no annoying nut.. Just take out those 2 bolts from the upper driver's side of the tranny and the starter is loose..

I think the 96+ cars are threaded, no nut..

Thanks for the reply. I have a 1995 E36 325I and I finally gave up and removed the inyake manifold. It was definitely a non threaded starter but I replaced it with a threaded. I did have some prblems with the dowel pin at the top of the starter in that it was difficuly to free.
