I have a 1998 328i. When accelerating I get a short vibration from the left rear at about 20 MPH. It is about when it shifts to second but not aways.
I vibration only last about a second and sometimes there is a rattle like the exhaust hittng the bottom of the car.

Sounds like the exhaust is the first thing to check. If you have something loose, certain normal vibrations of the car will cause resonance with it at times, giving a noticeable rattle at certain RPMs. It sounds like what you are describing is a body rattle, not a wheel balance problem, right?
