just got my 88 325i back on road after a trans swap and new exhaust so i noticed my lifters seemed kinda loud so i thought i would adjust them . after i found the tdc of #1 i went about the process when i finished the lifters werent any quieter as i figured they were loose before i did the adjustment. so are the 36 seriies known for noisy lifters or is something else the problem . the only i have found to cure the problem is to turn up the volume on the stereo

All m20s are going to sound a little like a sewing machine.
However, if you can hear it inside the car with the windows up at lower RPMs, something's not right. If I had to guess I'd say you mis-adjusted one or more lifter, or neglected to fully tighten one of the eccentric nuts. Best thing to do is probably open up the valve cover again and re-check the clearances.
