General E36 M3 questions

Looking to purchase an 95-98 M3 and was curious about a few things that appear to have changed over the years.

I was told the following and wanted to know if the info is correct.

95 - different suspension components in same way compared to 96-99

95 - OBDI easy to mod chips etc great for a track car, lighter 3.0L motor.

96-99 OBDII need to flash computer to update, more smog heavier car.

95 - older style clutch design that wears out or breaks easier compared to 96- later models

96-99 had staggered wheels wider in the rear narrow in front

95 LSD was an option so some might not have it.

Also looking for advice on what to look for when buying a used M3 from a private party. (Water pump update? , Radiator replace?, O2)

Was also told that M3's are known for failing smog if you don't get the CAT really hot before testing.

Any recommendations since more than likely I will be tracking the M3 as well as using it as a one of my daily drivers.

What upgrades in the way of springs and shocks strut tower braces do you guys recommend for making the M3 into a nice track car but still street-able. (Willow, Laguna, Buttonwillow)

Thanks in advance for all comments.

From what I've heard the 95 OBD-I is the best E36 track car. It appears you've already done a lot of research. If a serious track car is what you want and you plan to do engine mods then 95 is it. If you want to spend less time and money and keep it mostly stock engine-wise then the later years are probably better.
