Flywheel
Hey Guys,
Do I need to replace a dual mass flywheel when you replace the clutch? I was told that flywheel couldn’t be resurfaces. What do you think? |

These dual mass flywheels are complicated units. I had my clutch replaced a while back and my shop resurfaced my flywheel. they are a top notch shop with certified mechanics and wouldn't do anything that wasn't up to par. I have heard that you need a skilled machinist to resurface these, though. I haven't had a hint of problems with my ride since the clutch job, so it hasn't affected the performance at all.
I don't know if BMW says you can't resurface them just to prevent extended wear on these items, or because heat generation during the resurfacing can damage the units (which I doubt, because a hot clutch will generate higher temperatures than resurfacing). I don't know, but you definitely can resurface them. |

I agree.
I saw my one and it look like it can be resurfaced. But my flywheel was in such bad shape internally that I decided to replace it. Thanks for the info |

For those of you interested in resurfacing dual mass flywheels..........
I had to replace my flywheel on my 318. I bought one off e-bay, in pretty bad shape (but balanced) for $30. There is a GREAT machine shop in Libertyville, IL. that resurfaced the thing and did a beutiful job. In fact he did such a great job that I had to wait an extra day for him to contact one of the engineers in Germany for the exact spec. He felt that the spec range in the manual was too wide and he wanted precision. He explained to me that just about EVERY manufactorer claims that dual masses cannot be turned. He also said that all of the Corvette guys come to him for this work quite often. If any of you are in the north suburbs of Chicago, I HIGHLY recomend Rouse's Auto on Milwaukee Ave. I don't usually plug, and I have no affiliation with them other than that they are they only guys that I allow (other than me) to work on my cars and bikes. |
