Question 1996 E36 Convertible Problem

I just bought a 1996 E36 Convertible. When I turn the handle to unlatch the top and press the button to open it the top moves about a 1/2 inch and then stops. It looks as if the back wants to raise and then quits about a 1/4 of an inch from the deck. I have no manuals to reference to find out the proper sequence of events. Please help so I can avaoid the dealer.

I have seen wher sometimes the rods get bent that are back in the well, the only real way to confrim this is to have a good tech take a look at it if you are unfamiliar with the lay out, some of those rods have strange bends and curves and wher you might think its bent its actualy fine, like wise it may be bent incorrectely.

It looks as though is has a new top. I guess it could have been installed wrong. Is there a procedure to open the top manually to check whether or not it moves freely?

try these procedures, it maybe that one of the convertible motor in your trunk is disengaged. follow instruction, this will reset your top.

I have a 94 convertable, an even though I live in sunny San Diego, California I don't lower the top that often. I was told by the mechanic that the top needs to be operated at least a couple of times a week, other wise it will have the problem you describe. On mine when that happens I hold the botton down for 10 or 15 seconds, then if it still hasn't started I put the windows back up, close the top and repeat a couple of times and that takes care of the problem.

I had the exact same problem 2months ago. Took it to the bmw dealership, they said it was an elastic strap problem so they replaced them and haven't had the problem since. (Knock on wood) I couldn't find the price for the part but i need to goto there tommorrow so i will let you know. I had just moved to florida and says that heat was one of the factors.

I am having this problem on a 99 M3, one of the bows was broken, so I had it replaced and had the straps replaced. Aparently one of the bows has just broken again.... only a few days later. Does anyone know why one of the bows is breaking.

I will have a BMW tech fix it for me, I just want to know what is going on so I can make sure it is fixed properly.

Thanks for any help.
