Unhappy Steering Shaft Coupling

Has anyone ever replaced the steering shaft flexible coupling on an '84 E30.
This the one with the rubber insert with four bolts thru it.
I've started the job but it looks like the steering rack has to be loosened off.
Is this right or is there another way to do it?

"doggee"?

The Bentleys manual has an excellent write-up on this. I was just reading it last night as I am thinking of doing the same on my 214,xxx mile '90 325iX.
