91 E30 Check Engine Light

Hello,

A female friend of mine wrote me recently regarding the sporatic appearance of the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT on her car.
She's reluctant to go to the dealer until she has some idea what might be wrong. I enclosed her message to me below:

Hi Tom, Thanks, it's a 1991, but was built in 6/90, so it is an E30 318i w/ a M42 engine. The check engine light has stayed on about 4 times in the last 4 months. It is supposed to go on when you start the car and immediately go off. The first couple of times it happened I pulled over and thought about what to do. I then decided to drive a gas station on the same block and realized the light went out. The next time and tested it, and sure enough as soon as I put the car in gear and accelerated the light went out again. There are no other problems I have noticed occuring at the same time, and all levels and sensors appear to be fine.

Any help or suggestions very much appreciated.

Do a search. There's supposed to be a magical ritual you go through upon startup that tells you what codes have been thrown by the ecu.

I had that problem once. I went through books after books until I tried something simple as putting in a half quart of oil. After that, problem's solved.

Thanks for the replies.

Send a message via AIM to Bear
I believe that Auto Zone or Advance MAY be able to do a code scan (iffy on early bimmers) and it is free.
