Brake Light Check
I cannot get the stupid brake light check light to go off. I'm stuck with the stupid CHECK message on my dash the whole time I'm driving. Here is what I have tried:
-changing the fuse on the brake light slot (slot 6) AND cleaning the slot with an electronics cleaner. -checked to see if any bulbs had a brass base. Only the high mount stop one did, so I changed that. -replaced the brake light bulbs with new ones. I made sure they were the right watt and everything. -took out the bulbs and cleaned the contact with an electronics cleaner and then sprayed it with WD40. I want to get rid of this stupid message once and for all and it is very frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas? |

Yes the brake lights are working and the car is a 1988 325i convertible. The check light starts blinking right when I start the car.

I have this same problem sometimes with my 1990 325is. The "Check" light on the instrument panel stops flashing when I press the test button on the annunciator panel (which is just above the rearview mirror, containing warning lights for brake lights, other lights etc). Once I have pressed the test button, the "check" light on the instrument panel stops flashing and I am left with just the red light on the annunciator panel.
As of late, I have managed to avoid the problem completely by depressing the brake pedal immediately after turning the engine on. The "check" light on the instrument panel flashes until I put my foot on the brake, then it stops flashing, and the annunciator panel light does not light either (solving the annoying problem.) I don't know if this will solve your problem or not, but I hope it was of use. |

When you first start the car the computer goes thru a test.
It doesnt test the brake lights until you hit the brakes. Which then if everythings o.k. the light stays OFF->>if it stays on you have a brake light bulb burnt out or a bad socket.(usually) |

If you are ok with disconnecting the entire system, which is what I did, you can do the following in about 3 minutes. Remove the Active Check Control Module (ACCM) and disconnect the multi-pin connector. The ACCM is the lighted display above the mirror. To remove the ACCM push upwards and pry from the bottom and it will come out. It is a press fit and there are no clips. Once removed take the largest flat head screw driver you have and place it under the pin connector on the wire harness side and rotate the screw driver to remove the connector. With the connector disconnected replace the ACCM and wallah the check light is out permanently.
