1989 BMW 325 strange tones

Every so often a get a beep from the dash board. About 3 beeps.

It's been going on for about 2 years while I've been driving. It used to happen every few months or so but last week it happened twice in one day and then dissappeared. What is this? A warning of impending doom, (the sound would be quite calming if it didn't happen on the freeway!)

It means a meteor is coming your way. No seriously, this freaked me out too, the first time I heard it. You have your hourly / 1/2 hourly chime turned on. This is a feature that beeps about 30 seconds before the top of the hour so that you can change your radio station to the news...

There should be a little button on the OBC that looks like ))) that should turn off the chime...
