Clutch Slave Cylinder
I had both my clutch master and slave cylinder replaced 2 years ago by the shop. Now I am experiencing losing brake fluid, and every morning, I am having problem getting the 1st gear going smoothly. So I suspect it is the slave clutch. I took a look at the slave cylinder. There was brake fuild leaking around (near where the cylinder bolted to the transmission). 2 questions:
1) Is this mean the whole slave cylinder needs to be replaced ? 2) Can I still drive the car at least for one more day? going to work and to get the part on Monday. Will I experience the pedal goes all the way down all of sudden? I will be stuck then... Thanks for any advices! T '85 325 e |

OK, just for the record, here are the answers. They are yes and yes.
1) The leak was so bad that I need to refill the brake fluid almost every week, so replacing the clutch slave is a must. 2) I could still drive it, just be ready to fill the brake fuild reservior every now and then. I went by for another day. Although at one point, the pedal went half way down not returning. I checked the reservoir. It was getting very low. Filled it back up. pumped the clutch a couple times. It returned to normal. I had my clutch slave replaced on Monday night (had to skip two monday night football games). However, the pay-off- Smooth 1st gear starting out the car every morning. And refill the brake fluid is no longer a weekly task!!! Last edited by tanntheman; 09-22-2005 at 09:13 PM.. |

Just happens I have four bmrs, one is an 85 325e, I bought it new. my wife put 425k miles on it, then my 17 yr old totaled it. Its parted out now (the other ones get driven daily). But I have replaced several clutch slave cylinders on the old 85.
Drive it. Add fluid, drive it some more. Just keep an eye on the brake fluid level. The slave cylinder is easy to change yourself, but avoid the rebuilt ones. Spend the extra money and get a new one. Take it from someone who had the same model as yours for 20 years, You have a very tough car. Change the oil and the timing belt, and drive the crap out of it.
