Hi all! This is my first post, thank you so SO much to all who have given your advice and stories, it has helped me tremendously.
About four months ago, I bought my dream car, it's a 1991 318is E30 m42 silver beauty! It had 170K and the previous owner (of 7 years) had done very little maintencence. Being a maintenence freak (and grad student- bad combo) I immediately replaced all belts, oil, filters, fuel filter, plugs) I took the car to a mechanic and asked him also to change the diff gear oil as well as the gear oil in the box. (I hadn't read the article on gear oil wieghts and only know that the mechanic used generic gear oil--same for the box and diff. It was a thick honey like blue substance that came out of a tube) That's when fuuny things started, I can't shift to 2nd w/o warming up the car (else it will grind) and occasionally, the transmission lets out a high pitched whine, esp. at high speeds. The whine gets louder as the car accelerates and eventually goes away, only to reappear at random. My cousin, own the exact same car and thinks it's the box oil, any thougts? |

that sound - I think it's your synchro's on the transmission - had all of my gears leave me except for 2nd and 5th - then the last 2 failed - had to get a new tranny.
if it's the synchros, it could be costly to rebuild - it is possible to get a new tranny for about $250.00
