84 323i clutch spring

I am in the middle of replacing the clutch slave. When I took the cylinder off the pedal the clutch return spring was attached to the pedal but not the firewall. Q? Is it supposed to be attached to the firewall? And if so how? Dont want to put it back together until I find out because I believe that the only thing wrong with the system was that the spring fell while in use and tore up the fluid return hose causing it to fall off of the slave and that is why I had fluid draining into the car.
