auto trans noise
I am still trying to identify a possible auto transmission problem. I have a 1988 325 and am getting a metallic-sounding rattle (like a metal slinky) and muffled knocking from the shifter / transmission area.
This started (maybe coincidentally) after running over a deer - icy roads so I could not swerve. The sound starts around 20 mph, getting the loudest around 45, then tapers off. The sound remains after putting it in neutral while driving 45 and does not seem to be limited to a specific gear. It drives fine and shifts fine but I am concerned that it may leave me stranded. I was underneath and did not see anything damaged nor stuck in the drivetrain and wheel area. Any thoughts woud be appreciated ! |

Hey there,
That sounds like the same problem I had a while back. For me it was the tranny mounts. You should check out the article on replacing your transmission mounts under the TECH INFO CENTER of this site. That article was very helpful for me. Good luck, HT |
