starting problem

Please help, my 98 318ti starts when ever it feel like it. when I first start it in the mornings it starts fine, quick and sounds good, but once I've driven for about 10 or 15 miles stop the engine and try to start it, a rotating wheel turning sound comes from within the starter area and what ever is turning comes to an immediate stop causing a "CLUNG" type sound. After two or three attempts and after having the same symptoms the engine Finlay starts again just fine. Is it my starter, spark plugs, ignition wires? what is going on please help me.
