what kind of car and what engine? I will assume you have some form of newer 3 series car. There are no alignment marks. there is a set of tools used to set the crank and cams to the proper positions. One is a pin that goes through a hole above the starter and the other is a set of locking blocks that hold the cams down.

the car is an 92' non-vanos, the car sounds like the timing is off. If the timing was would it effect the compression test

Yes it can. I retarded my exhaust cam 4deg. and advanced my intake cam 2deg and the compression went up 20psi. Idle is a little rough but it spools quickly and works well with the light flywheel.

Ok, I bought this from my friend, the headgasket is post to been replaced but the compression is high on the #1 slight goes down 2-6. and the when i try to turn it over sounds like the timing is off. its got spark and gas. I looks as if the cams are off.
