Question Shop Labor Rates

Just looking for some feedback on garage rates from whereever it is that you call home. I recently had my water pump replaced at a shop that specializes in european cars. I know, I know...this is the type of repair that I should have done myself, but I was short on time and the Chicago winter weather has left my garage ice cold. I did have the parts, though, which I had ordered from Pelican so I though that this would be relatively cheap. Turns out the labor rate was slightly over $100/hour. Does this sound reasonable? I know that I've gone to "specialists", but it does seem high. The service was great and I've no problems with the car since then, but I thought I'd ask around for some comparison data before returning for any other repairs. Thanks.

I've paid $103/hr and $80/hr for specialists. Decent shops that don't specialize in Euro cars run $60 or so.

If you bring the parts in with you, you'll usually pay slightly higher labor prices so the shop can make up the profits they lost by not selling you the parts. Usually worthwhile to just let them by the parts for you.

In Montreal Qc, I used to pay 85$/hr (CDN) until I found a another good BMW specialist who charges 47$/hr or 50$/hr if I choose to bring my own parts!

labor rates

Possibly the rate you pay may depend where you live. Some shopping around and networking with fellow car buffs would help locate a reputable shop with a reasonable labor rate. I live just ouside Richmond, Va. , rates for reputable mechanics range from $65.00 per hour to whatevery they can get you for at the BMW dealership. My labor rate is $0.00 per hour, so I do my own work, 'cause I really like my 318i ('87).

Last time I checked at a dealer three years ago, it was $146 an hour. Independent at the same time was about $103. In the SF bay area.

In the Georgia area, $60 - $70 per hour would be considered reasonable.
