1991 325i convertible - stuttering and stalling

Hello there,
This is my first post on the forum.
While I was driving back home from a weekend road trip last week, my car started acting up. I seemed to lose all power while accelerating (very dangerous trying to merge on the highway) and the engine light would come on. Once the engine seemingly adjusted to the speed the engine light would go off and the car would run as normal. But, ever time I slowed down or stopped the same thing would happen. When I got back to the city, the car started stuttering and jerking and now it stalls almost as soon as the engine is started (so I can't drive it). Any thoughts on what is causing this problem? A couple of weeks before the road trip, there were torrential rains in my city and my boyfriend drove through a deep puddle. The car stopped dead when this happened. There was water in the rear foot wells and in the engine (we drained and changed the oil several times and the car seemed to be back to normal).
I would appreciate any thoughts on what the damage may be.
Thanks!
Catherine

BMW Roundel

when's the last time your 02 sensor was changed? a very rich-running engine will shoot too much gas into the cylinder and cause your car to run rough or stall on accelleration. also a fresh set of plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, and a fuel filter might work wonders. when you take the plugs out you can tell how healthy your engine is by the condition of the electrode. not sure about the water-induced stall however.

Thank you for your rely. I took the car BMW and they identified a faulty Air Flow Meter. It's been replaced and the car runs perfectly now - actually better than ever.
