The top on my 1995 325iC failed to go down, and I was able to determine the cause to be a bend in the bracket that is attached to the rod that operates the top (from the motor in the trunk). After straightening it, the top operated in its normal way (needing help to get past certain positions) for 4 days then stopped. The bracket has begun to bend again. I didn't notice any binding in the operation of the top.
I wonder if anyone has a clue as to what is happening and how to rectify the problem. One thought I had was to mount the rod on the other side of the bracket to try to reduce the bending force as well as provide more clearance.

Hi there. I have the same car, and I know exactly what you are talking about. I think that once the bracket bends, it has permanently lost it's structural integrity. Causes of the bending are an improperly aligned roof (tech article coming soon), that can get stuck or caught on the way up. The roof is somewhat complicated and tends to need adjustment every once in a while. Also, worn bushings and loose screws can cause problems.

I looked up that part number, and it's about $133 - you have to buy the whole rod and bracket - they are one piece...

That would be #1 on this diagram, right?

Actually the part that is bent is on the top's frame - i.e., the bracket that #9 on your drawing attaches to.

Hmm, I don't think that bracket is available separately. I would be very careful raising and lowering the roof - you might want to get it welded together for extra strength. That would probably cost about $15 at any good shop...

I haven't lowered it since it stuck again, thinking that if I bend it back again, eventually I will break it off - which would not be good. I think your suggestion of welding it to stiffen it is the right approach. Thank you very much.

Not a problem. The bracket seems to be attached to the frame, and only available as a one-piece frame, which means it would cost many $$$$ to get a new one. Try the welding approach, and let us know how that works...
