Unhappy Problems/hesitation at 3,500 rpms'

My 88 325i starts everytime, quickly when cold, after a few seconds when warm. It idles fine but under acceleration it hesitates (check engine light comes on), act like it wants to stall. Ease off the gas and it continues to run. Check engine light is not on but I can't pull codes (pedal stomping method). Replaced fuel pump a few months ago (used) and the fuel filter last week. Air filter is seven months old (Fram) and I cleaned the MAF & ICV when I replaced the fuel pump. Read article regarding TPS and wondering if it could be the cause. Also, I only get 14 mpg and muffler is bad. Thoughts anyone?

Starts better when cold than when warm: Sounds like it's running rich.

Hesitates, low power when accellerating: Sounds like it's running rich.

Poor fuel mileage: Sounds like it's running rich.

I'll bet your plugs are very sooty and black, too. And you might smell your cat converter (cats get overloaded when the engine pumps out excess unburned fuel).

Did the problem exist before you cleaned the MAF and ICV, or did you do clean them trying to solve this problem? I'm more of a carb guy but I'd say very probably one of your fuel injection system input devices/sensors is screwy. I wonder if an ICV could even cause the magnitude of your problem. On a carb the idle circuit has very little impact on under-load conditions.

I'm going to pull plugs this week and see what they look like.
