Clunk in rear while shifting

This is the first time I have experienced this issue. My 97 328i is exhibiting a strange clunk in the rear of the car when I shift gears.

The sound is a dull thud, it seems as if it's coming from the rear of the car and I am looking for some possible clues as to what it could be.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I have a similar experience with my older BMW 2002 and Bavaria. It happened when downshift hard and going into reverse. The problem was the 'donut'- Center support bearing.

I have the same problem in my 94 318i. Any idea of how much the dammed hub will cost to replace?

Could be the flexdisk/guibo or the center support bearing. They are each about $50-75 and many people replace them both at the same time. You have to drop the exhaust and unbolt the drive shaft at the tranny. It's not hard but not easy either.
