How hot are your heads?

As mentioned in This Thread I am trying to troubleshoot a temp guage problem, to see if my car is really overheating as potentially indicated byt the guage.

I have an infrared temp sensor, but i'm trying ot find out what the benchmark is for heat. Can anyone tell me what the temp readings should be for where? On the "M" of the head cover i'm getting about 185F... but on the head of the bolt of the valve cover i get about 225F.

Ambient temp is about 85F.

Any thoughts?

OK, I pulled the guage cluster out, which was much more of a PITA than I expected, mostly due to the flat plastic piece above the steering column. The nuts on back of the fuel gauge and the temp gauge were both loose, one was missing (fuel) so this does seem likely to be the problem.

However, I would still be interested in the proper engine temp numbers if anyone has them, just for my comfort. I'd like ot see some other peoples readings.

If anyone has any guidence on this, I'd appreciate it.
