can someone help me with belt/pulley noise?
hi hello everyone!
i am new to pelicanparts forum, but you have seen me at other places like dtmpower.net! anyway, i like the techinal knowledge of this forum. now, i have a question that for you experts... it is concerning my '96 328... i used to have that terrible belt noise squeal that only occurs during cold start up and eventually goes away with engine heat,,, anyway,, i replaced both drive belts and also replaced the belt tensioner, and like magic, it was soooo quiet afterward!! but, within days, i'm starting to get a little return of noise again and its progressing a little louder each day.. urgh,,,, and, again, the noise appears to be coming from either the belt tensioner or alternator pulley,, they are so close it is hard to tell which one is making the noise... why would the noise start making a come back within just a matter of days? and, there is a second question,,, why is it that some 2.8L engines used in the 328 have a different belt configuration? some M52 engines have the additional pulley by the alternator, while other M52's like mine do not.. that is very strange... cuz there's only one belt part number,,, is it cuz some M52's use a mechanical tensioner, while others use the hydraulic tensioner? |

I have a 1999 323 IC that does the same thing. It has the cold air intake from Dinan and thought that might have something to do with it when its cold but probably not. Mine even though its in a garage all night does the same thing every morning. The squeal only lasts a couple of minutes then its gone. I could use an answer to this question also.

I had the same prob with my 98 323ci 2 years ago. Replaced belts and still had off and on squeel which seemed to be temperature related. Finally determined it to be the idler pulley. Replaced it and squeeky problem went away.

A noise that happens only on cold start may be the secondary air fan - that thing that looks like a vacuum cleaner motor on the passenger side. You can unplug it and see if it makes any difference. If it has failed, you probably need a new check valve at the exhaust manifold as well.
Yes, there are two different belt tensioner arrangements on 2.8L engines. Not sure which is better, but you can convert if you don't like what you have. |
